We the "good people" must learn to play this ancient game called politics -- not necessarily by joining political parties, but by participating in public affairs by entering the game, and not just being bystanders and spectators.
(Politics used to be called statecraft or statesmanship at some points of history. Basically, politics is participation in public affairs with an aim to change our shared destiny, and of course, our individual lives also. But this is the objective that we have to constantly remember; otherwise, we will just become preoccupied with feathering our own nests or building our own little kingdoms.)
When we enter into politics and start "playing politics", we learn two lessons:
One, that WE ARE OURSELVES NOT ABOVE dirtiness and manipulation. This is a sobering and humbling lesson. If we are not careful, the game of politics will change us for the worse. It changes most people for the worse, because they get caught up in the moment, and do not remember the objectives for which they originally joined politics.
And two, that if we try really hard and play really smart, and don't forget our own basic nature, we can change the way the game is played. SOME RULES OF THE GAME WILL CHANGE because of our participation in the game. ( Quoted fromthe  FB post of Krishnraj Rao )
